Dear Residents,

Well, summer has arrived, although with the tremendous amount of rain that we have had, it has been difficult to tell.  I suspect that pretty soon, we  will be blessed with quite a bit of sunshine!

Just as in previous years, we have had great cooperation between the Business Improvement District (BID) and the Mayor’s Beautification Society, and a record number of flowers and plantings have been added to the Village landscape!  We thank the Department of Public Works and the Village Horticultural Crew for also assisting in the continued beautification of the Village through plantings and clean up.  John Kehoe’s crew have been out early in the mornings tending to the plants so they continue to provide a pleasant color scheme at the various planter locations and around the Village Square [Gazebo] Park.

As you may have noticed, we are continuing an ongoing effort to refurbish the Charles Cowan Marina.  New lighting has replaced the old style lighting.  New speed bumps have been added and the west side of the Marina has had a significant section of boardwalk replaced!  That effort will continue as funding is made available.  We hope that our residents will enjoy the new look of the Marina and visit often.

Remember to pick up a Marina Parking Sticker from Village Hall during regular working hours.  It is free to Village Residents!

Many thanks to the Joint Civics Association for their continued help as we continue with Windows on Wellwood II, a program where we encourage local artists, students and hobbyists to provide us with their art projects and these items are placed in various empty storefronts which help beautify these buildings until a suitable tenant is found.

We also encourage our residents to shop and utilize the services in our downtown.  Shopping locally is also a great way to save on gas money!

Speaking of the cost of gas, you don’t need to be reminded that gasoline prices have risen steadily these past few months.  Not only does the high cost of energy effect you, it is having dramatic impact on the Village of Lindenhurst annual budget and the work of our various departments!  Obviously, we all need to do our part to reduce these energy costs.  Each one of us can do many simple things such as the following:

-         Do not leave the air conditioners running when you are not at home.

-         Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

-         Don’t idle a vehicle for a long period of time

-         Use energy efficient devices such a fluorescent light bulbs, Energy Star rated appliances, etc.

These are just some small suggestions that can make a difference.

Some of the many roadwork projects that have been completed include the Albert Street project.  The piping that runs under Albert Street (near North Jefferson Avenue) was replaced preventing the water running to the Great South Bay to flow under the road not over it.  The culvert and pipe repair affected the surrounding area as well.  Now during a major rainstorm, the constant flooding that has occurred for years over at Muncy Avenue and West John Street is almost non-existent.

The Village of Lindenhurst’s summer camp program is gearing up for it’s usual great success and we thank Coach Mike Canobbio and his entire staff for the great job that they do each year!  We hope the children will have a fun summer.

Our Summer Concert Series continues at Village Square (Gazebo) Park.  You can check out the schedule right here on our website under the Community Events Calendar.

Our administration continues to encourage residents to share their ideas, suggestions and concerns with us.  Our partnership with the various civic, service and community organizations have strengthened these last three years because we all have the same goal of keeping Lindenhurst as a great place to live, work and enjoy!

Along with the Board of Trustees, our Administrative staff and all the employees of the Village, we look forward to continue to serve the Village to the best of our abilities for the betterment of Lindenhurst.  Have a great summer!

Warmest Regards,

Mayor Tom Brennan
