Village
Has A Local Law
Concerning The Sanitary Control Of Dog Waste
Under
Chapter
67-12, Nuisances the Village has a local
law concerning the sanitary control of dog
waste.
Mayor
Thomas Brennan of the Village of Lindenhurst
says “The code is intended to reduce the
amount of dog waste on public sidewalks,
roadways, parks and playground areas throughout
the Village.”
Studies
have shown that bacteria from animal waste has
contributed significantly to water pollution in
our streams, canals and the Great South Bay
following rain storms.
When pet waste enters our waterways, they
pollute the water and can destroy fish and
wildlife habitats, cause beach closings and
restrict shellfish harvesting.
Lindenhurst
Village Trustee Michael Lavorata added “Public
cooperation is vital to help prevent or at least
minimize animal waste/pollutants from entering
our waterways.”
Under
the Village Code, dog owners are required to
pick up their dog’s waste and dispose of it in
a sanitary way, preferably by putting it out for
garbage collection.
The waste should not be left in public
areas or placed in street drainage basins.
So be a good
neighbor
prevent messes from animals from being tracked
inside. Improve
the aesthetics and the environment of
Lindenhurst by picking up after your pet.
“Not only is it a
public health concern, it is basic neighborly
and common courtesy to pick up after our dogs
and help keep our community clean,” said Mayor
Brennan
